Everything You Need To Know About the Timeless Live Edge Dining Table

home source live edge furniture

We especially love the use of live edge wood dining tables, as they lend an organic and elegantly understated tone to the dining room. The natural wood tones are unique to each table which makes every piece one of a kind. I am totally loving this live edge wood dining table right now. The simplistic design is timeless yet modern. It has me dreaming of using it in a client’s home, so I decided to show you how I would style it. Read on below for the inspiration behind this modern coastal dining room I created.

If you’re looking for furniture that will bring the WOW factor to your living space, a live edge table might be the choice for you.

What are live edge tables?

The term “live-edge” refers to the natural edge left on at least one side of a piece of wood.

Rather than the sharp, clean lines in more traditional wooden furniture, live-edge retains the natural beauty of the tree. Other natural characters of the wood, such as knots and cracks, are often left the way they are and become beautiful features of the live edge table.

Live-edge designs help you bring the outdoors into your home in the form of functional, modern furniture.

Each live-edge dining table is an original, one-of-a-kind piece. There’s a huge number of options when it comes to picking your table including the species, woodcut, colors, and more.

What to look for:

Live-edge designs help you bring the outdoors into your home in the form of functional, modern furniture.

When it’s time to go shopping for your new masterpiece, it can be a bit overwhelming deciding between the various options.

Here are some of the more common features you’ll come across.

Wood cuts

Slab

A wood slab can be cut vertically from a tree. They will usually have a live edge on both sides. Due to the length, this is the most traditional option for coffee and dining room tables.

Slices

A wood slice, or tree round, can be cut horizontally from a tree. The slice will have a live edge all the way around and beautifully displays the growth rings. Side tables usually have this type of cut.

Burl

Burl tends to be one of the most expensive options. Some trees have a large rounded outgrowth as a result of a deformity, called a burl. Burl wood is highly prized for stunning grain patterns and unique, bumpy edges.

Features and traits

Bowties

Bowties, also known as butterflies, are inlaid pieces of wood across a crack in the tabletop. They prevent the crack from getting wider while adding another beautiful element to the finished piece.

Bark, or no bark?

Depending on the type of table and wood used, the craftsman will decide whether to leave the bark on or take it off.

It’s somewhat more common for the bark to be removed and edges sanded down slightly.

Will a live-edge dining table fit in with your decor?

Long gone is the myth that natural wooden furniture only belongs in remote cottages. As you know, have an ageless design that will always belong no matter how many times you redecorate your home.

From rustic country home to modern, minimalist spaces, these tables will complement their surroundings.

14 Easy Ways to Make You Happy in the Comfy, Cozy Home That You’ve Always Dreamed Of

14 ways to make your home comfy and cozy

More than ever, our homes need to function as a calming haven that is our escape from the world. Comfort is paramount. Whether you’re kicking back to watch a movie or enjoying a delicious family meal, your home should inspire relaxation and reflect a comfortable and stylish interior design in every room. The key is figuring out how to balance comfort and style in all your spaces. Here are 14 easy ways to elevate your comfy, cozy home so that you are content and comfortable in your own space.

“The coziest homes have a soul and a story to tell, where meaningful pieces come together effortlessly with functional ones, where every corner piques interest and makes everyone smile—a place where you feel like you are being hugged the moment you walk in the door.”

1. Start with a plush sectional

Home Source Alisa 93″ Upholstered Sofa, Paxton Khaki

Every comfortable living room should have a deep seating option, especially if you have kids. It provides a comfy place for you to kick back and relax with your family, have movie nights with friends, or even just stretch out for an afternoon nap. We love a sectional for extra space, but it’s up to you if you want a sofa or a sectional.

Whichever option you go with, top it with some cozy and fun patterned pillows to give it some extra cushioning. If you’re not sure that one will fit in your living space, don’t worry. Obviously, there are plenty of options available and you’ll easily find a more compact design that’s just as stylish and cozy.

2. Find a signature scent for your dreamy home

Trust me when I say that there are plenty of ways to cozy up your home with scents, whether derived from a candle, a diffuser, an essential oil spray, or just the smell of perfume in the air. Having scents around the house creates an instant mood.

Sometimes, a solution to cozying up your home in one simple step is to light a candle! Candles don’t have to be expensive to smell amazing, either.

3. Texture = Welcoming

Layering rugs is also a great way to add texture to your home.

Plush pillows and soft tapestry. Baskets and natural fibers. Smooth leather and rough natural woods. A combination of textures is a key element to any comfortable home design.

It’s about engaging all the senses in every room of the house, so experiment with a wide mix. Try pairing a leather bench with a slipcovered sofa, hang an eye-catching chandelier in front of a mirror above your mantel, or go for the raw-wood headboard and offset it with piles of soft linen pillows. Get creative with your furniture and accent mix and see what suits your taste.

4. Add Something Organic in Every Room

Decorating your home with driftwood is a wonderful idea because it is not only stunning to look at, but also very eco-friendly since you are re-purposing old wood into brilliant designs. Having an organic look in your home with nature-inspired objects of driftwood is a very trendy style. It not necessarily limited to just beach or coastal style, this look can create a super rustic ambiance. This will not only soften up your home but provide a comfy mood for the room.

5. Play With Pops of Pattern

When it comes to instant style, patterns are a great way to add visual interest and a personal touch to any space in the home. It also provides a strong sense of comfort.

If you’re not one for a lot of color and pattern in your house, try adding bright accents such as printed pillows, bold wall art, and quirky design objects that you can switch out as needed. This lets you ease in patterns without committing in a big way.

6. ADD LIFE WITH PLANTS & FLOWERS

Plants are cozy because they are living things.

Be warned though: at some point or another, some of your plants will die. It happens even to the most seasoned gardeners so don’t despair! It’s part of the learning process.

The other wonderful thing about having lots of plants means you get to accessorize with just as many glorious vessels! Plants housed in pots, planters, and baskets are in and of themselves very cozy and have the benefit of adding textural pops of interest to any room. There is something about live plants that just makes for a comfy, cozy home.

7. Create a Bold Palette

Using rich and deep colors is an effective way to give an impression of warmth. Dark charcoal and navy both look fantastic on walls and work well together, especially when teamed with furnishings in contrasting colors, such as berry shades and mustard yellow,’ she explains. Wooden furniture is also excellent in combination with a dark palette.

Bring in burnt oranges, deep reds, mustard yellows, earthy tones, or saturated colors for a bolder choice. Reflecting on the seasons in your home is a great way to freshen up your space. To really lift these colors and bring them to life, consider a mixture of creative layouts, patterns, and textures.

Mid-century modern and industrial styles in particular look great teamed with rich shades.

8. Add some shine to your life

Copper and brass work especially well with grey and navy walls. Of course, you can introduce a bit of sparkle with most colour schemes if you go for small highlights such as scatter cushions, tea light holders, and picture frames.

Another great use of metallics is on the inside of lampshades as it will cast a warm glow to the surroundings, and even when not lit will still add interest and opulence to the scheme.

9. Upholstered Headboard? Yes PLEASE.

You can instantly dial up the comfort and style in your bedroom by adding a soft tufted headboard as the centerpiece. The plush texture and curves will make it a captivating focal point in the bedroom while also offering you padded support.

Plush = Comfy AND cozy.

Balance it out with other luxurious accents, such as glamorous lighting, a bold rug, and a chic bench. The goal is to design a room that makes you want to sleep in on the weekends and turn in early on weeknights.

10. Divide with consoles.

Console tables are an incredibly versatile piece of furniture. Whether pushed up against a wall or against a sofa, these can act as easy barriers to separate different areas of an open-concept living area or to separate seating arrangements.

A simple wooden console table provides storage and creates a barrier between the seating area and the open space around it. Moving furniture away from the walls creates a much more intimate seating area.

11. A personal library

There’s something comforting about books. Bookshelves take up a large amount of wall space, so they’re easy to add to a living room where the furniture is pushed away from the walls.

For owners with a smaller collection, arranging items together with knick-knacks and accent pieces is a great way to fill the vertical space. This design also attaches a large piece of artwork to the empty shelves just above the sofa. Who wouldn’t want to read in a comfy, cozy home?

12. Decorate with stuff that you like

Next, make sure to decorate your home with the stuff you like, so you would always feel cozy where you live. If you like to read, make yourself a house library. If you like to watch movies, make yourself a house cinema. Anything that would further personalize your home, and make it more welcoming.

13. Go crazy with the pillows

I am a pillow hoarder & usually load up every single piece of furniture. This instantly makes for a comfy, cozy home. Sometimes this can annoy people who look at our photos or some get intimidated by adding pillows because of the “room” issues, but in our home, we sit on the pillows, toss them on the floor, hug them, squish them, & wear them out. The pillows at our house are meant to be used & to really be used for comfort. No pillow is safe around these parts.

14. Mix the old and the new

One of the most important ways to character to your home is to include vintage or antique pieces! They don’t have to be family heirlooms. In fact, purchasing second hand pieces on Craigslist or in thrift stores can be so rewarding and add so much charm to your home.

And there you go, folks! Those were some of the best interior design tips for a comfy, cozy home. If you enjoyed the article, or if you have anything to ask, let us know.

Trends in 2021 That Will Make You Want To Never Leave Your Home

Trends change about every 10 years, and after 2020, I think everyone is ready to flip a new page!

2020 has had such a big impact on everyone, and really in all parts of our day-to-day lives. Financially, physically, spiritually, relationally – you name it, it has been affected.

THERE ARE A FEW INTERESTING WAYS THAT 2020 AFFECTED THE DESIGN INDUSTRY:

Home Source Funriture has had an influx in sales due to the fact that people are restyling their homes.

The DIY crowd was out in droves as a lot of people realized they have the time to get projects done in their homes, yards, and gardens. Even my mom got a chance to finish her dream garden.

In a similar vein, the interior design styles and focuses that became more popular are really centered around the idea that people are spending much more time in their homes due to the pandemic.

On one hand, I think most everyone wanted their home to feel more comfortable, and more like a sanctuary.

While on the other hand balancing a need to be able to functionally do just about everything at home. Working, schooling, socializing and exercising- all in addition to the regular “home” things like eating and sleeping. It is a shift that puts the focus on our homes and immediate surroundings in a way that really hasn’t been seen in quite some time!

WHAT ARE THE CHANGES?

Some of the most obvious design element changes I saw last year were that mid-century modern furniture seemed to really start taking a back burner, and I think that’s mainly due to comfort! Those couches can look really stylish and sleek, they didn’t hold a candle in the comfort of the welcoming department.

Minimalism also seemed to be dying down.

Again, I think this is because of the idea of people needing to use their homes so much more and need to use their own space for so many more of their everyday activities, they realized they would need a bit more of the things they could have previously done without.

INCOMING INTERIOR DESIGN TRENDS FOR 2021:

  1. Color:
Rustic Vogue

Personally, I am seeing so much more color in 2021! I think we’ve had our past decade with lovely whites and neutrals, but now the colors are making their way back, and I am here for the color pops!

Honestly, I think the specific colors themselves that are having their time in the sun are the jewel tones!

Think: mauve, apricot, peach, coral, mustard yellow (this one is the one I’m loving the most), forest green, navy blue, hunter green.

2. The Farmhouse Split:

Contemporary Farmhouse

Another big change I’m noticing is a bit of a split in the Farmhouse Style that has become so popular.

About half of the current farmhouse trend is headed to modern farmhouse, similar to Studio McGee’s style.

3. Cottage Core

Cottage core.

If you’re not familiar with cottage core yet, I think the best way I can explain it is:

  • Sweet
  • Vintage
  • Old English
  • Garden
  • Victorian

Basically a farmhouse backdrop, but with lots of florals and colors in the foreground.

4. Wall Treatments:

Wallpaper is in for 2021. Fun colors and patterns are making it's way back into people's home.
Home is designed by Erika Bonnell

In 2021, I can see the white shiplap trend really starting to quiet down, at times simply with different colors (I’ve seen some painted black recently), and at other times, replaced altogether with a new take on board and batten walls.

I’ve been seeing lots of geometric and grid-shaped accent walls made with 1″ x 2″ pieces of wood and then painted in the dark rich colors I mentioned earlier.

Wallpaper is making a pretty fantastic comeback as an accent wall! With lots of colors and fun florals.

Fun accent wallpaper is another thing you shouldn’t be surprised to see in my own home in the coming year.

5. Kitchen Interior Design Trends for 2021:

In the kitchen, I’m seeing light, almost raw wood cabinets coming back – which feel like they fit very nicely with both modern farmhouse and cottage core.

6. In the Living Room:

Something fun that I have noticed a few times are these long, high bookshelves – I’m talking within about 1′ of the ceiling that almost look like an aspect of the millwork.

It’s a kind of creative use of that space that I haven’t seen around much before!

We love seeing greenery in homes! Are you a plant parent?

I’m also seeing lots of plants making their way into designs in all the different parts of the home – which I think really ties into the idea of us wanting sanctuary in our homes since we’re there so much.

This classic frame, modern sofa is reminiscent of a well-tailored suit with its exposed seams. The solid, handcrafted hardwood frame is upholstered with full-grain leather that is both soft and durable. The cushions are filled with eco-friendly, high resiliency, foam interior, making it a comfortable seating option for any living room.
Home Source’s Grant Leather Sofa, Tavern Whiskey

Cognac sofas are also really popular! Home Source has plenty of different styles of cognac sofas and they are always in stock. Not only are they stylish, but they are super comfortable!

What’s really neat about cognac is that it’s both a classic, and a current trend! This is one piece I’d recommend a bit of a splurge on if it’s something you love!

7. Caned Furniture:

Reminiscent of your grandfather’s classic radio, this media cabinet is a blast from the past. This thoroughly retro TV stand is constructed out of natural wood with rattan-covered doors to add texture and a vintage feel that makes this media stand look more bohemian and unique.
Home Source’s Forbes 70″ Media Console, Organic Natural

If you find vintage caned pieces while thrifting, I’d definitely suggest you snag them up!

There are also some really creative caned furniture options I’ve been seeing around! Some have been so bold as to use it as a full treatment on their cabinet doors, but I think I would stay away from such a large usage on a hard fixture, and stick to adding them on a smaller furniture piece that you can swap out later if needed.

I also think concrete fireplaces will be popping up more and more this year!

This is actually one time I might say it would be OK to ignore my “hard finishes” rule if this was a look you really loved. This treatment could totally be done over the top of an outdated stone fireplace if you were looking for a change.

8. Lastly, Black is back!:

I think it’s been about since the 80’s that black has been kind of relegated to the sidelines, but I truly see it making a comeback in 2021.

It can be so beautiful when used as an accent color, but I have to say that I think it can become a little flat, gothic and heavily masculine when used in too great a quantity.

Feel free to dabble and add those sophisticated elements, but be careful not to over do it!

AND THAT’S MY 2021 ROUND UP OF INCOMING INTERIOR DESIGN TRENDS!

The Home Source Team hopes this serves as a helpful look ahead and inspiration for you!

Let us know in the comments below which of these you’re most looking forward too, or if you see any other trends on the horizon that you think I might have left off!

Getting to Know Shelia from Olivia Hail Designs

Who is Shelia Hail?

Shelia Hail is the owner of Olivia Hail Designs. Olivia is her middle name and she claims that it’s her designer alter ego. Shelia, originally from Northern California, is a residential interior designer in Houston! Her business goal is to design more commercial spaces in addition to residential spaces. Designing boutique hotels is a dream of hers.

Likes: Food, travelling, her family, meeting new people, music, and designing things.

Dislikes: Negative Nancy’s, when things aren’t done efficiently, and waiting for things.

How did you get into interior design?

Well, I have just entered my third year of being an interior designer in Houston. I knew I wanted to become an interior designer when I started decorating and designing spaces for the events that my church held in Arizona. I graduated with a communications degree. When the church let me design these events for them, I really got to explore my creative side.

Then when Christmas came around, I decorated my home and wanted to do more! I started posting on Facebook groups, offering my decorating services for the holidays! When a local Houston mom reached out to me about decorating her home for the holidays, I was so excited! Creating and designing spaces for people and communities to make memories is absolutely my favorite thing to do now.

Less or more?

Shelia’s Monday Mood Board Inspo

I always go with less. Learning from other designers, you always have to do everything grand which is mind-blowing to me. Although less is better for me, it has to be intentional. It doesn’t make me a minimalist at all though. I want the home to feel like it’s lived in. Clutter is just not my niche.

Favorite style in your home?

I love mid-century modern! I also love everything else – that’s why I love this store! Home Source Furniture is fabulous because it’s very well-traveled. Finding these funky little pieces is fun for me! It’s fabulous.

What is your favorite project that you have done so far?

The most recent project that I have done is a renovation. It is modern and European with a little bit of transitional. It makes sense because this client travels and their family is in German. Being able to do that from beginning to end is so much fun! I had a say in what wall could come down and what goes where. My client told me that she trusted me. That was HUGE for me. The reason why a relationship is important to me was that my client was not second-guessing me. When I second-guessed by a client, I start to doubt myself and question what I am doing. My client really boosted my confidence!

What do you think makes our furniture store different from others?

Home Source Furniture is different because y’all have a variety of stuff! The warehouse is also huge; however; it can be overwhelming for clients. As a designer, it gives us the opportunity to treasure hunt for one-of-a-kind pieces. The warehouse also doesn’t have to be totally stylized. It’s a lot of inventory! It would be nice to see new displays of furniture every so often in the showroom. There is a lot of furniture here that could be stylized beautifully together. Decorations like live (or fake) plants and books would also help make the showroom come together.

Spice up your home during quarantine with Lisa Kelley

Getting to know Lisa Kelley

Lisa Kelley at Home Source Furniture Warehouse

We invited Lisa Kelley to Home Source Furniture to get to know her better as well as ask her some tips and tricks on how to spice up your home during quarantine. Lisa Kelley is not only an interior designer. She is a wife, married for 33 years (to the best guy in the world). A grandma to two of the most amazing grandkids, and a mom to five adult children, including a daughter in law.

Her goal for 2021 is to set boundaries. The whole pandemic has caused her to rethink what is most important in her life. Setting boundaries will help her keep less busy while creating a sense of peace and tranquility. “I do not want to let my calendar dictate my life,” she says. “I’d rather be more in control of what my life looks like.”

Fun facts about Lisa Kelley:

Likes: Great lighting, vintage rugs, and statement pieces.

Dislikes: Vessel sinks, buying matching furniture sets, and pillow soft sofa cushions.

How it all started

She has always known that she has a passion for making people’s homes look beautiful. When she babysat during high school, she would rearrange the house while the kids were sleeping. “I’ve always been able to see things in 3D.” says Lisa. However, she did not go to school for interior design. Instead, she studied fashion and design. She then became a flight attendant for Delta Airlines for 33 years, traveled the globe, and was inspired by the homes she saw all around the world. The passion intensified as her kids got a little older in high school. She started designing for commercial businesses and has worked with some of the most amazing designers, contractors, architects, and engineers. “I got to do these ginormous projects, built from the ground up. Now I am a residential interior designer and I love it.” Lisa states. “A good transformation is what satisfies me as a designer here in Houston.”

What does her home look like during quarantine?

Her favorite style in her home is a fusion of both old and nouveau. “I love treasure hunting and that is why I love Home Source Furniture! I love going through the warehouse and picking out one-of-kind treasures or wood pieces that I can incorporate with some more modern pieces,” she mentions. “My home is comfortable but also whimsical. I guess you could say my style is European. Having people use their five senses in my home is what I strive for.”

Less is more.

“I love starting with less. The problem is that people love to fill space with stuff. So getting rid of something to make room for the new things is pretty upsetting and a waste of money to be honest. I think less is more since it’s a healthier place to be in and gives you a sense of tranquility rather than a sense of clutter.”

She mentions that when there is less clutter, there is less stress. However, there are times when a collection is okay such as vases and pottery. It depends on how it’s stylized and if it is functional in the home as well.

What is your favorite piece at Home Source Furniture and how would you style it?

“Club chairs have to be one of them since there is a trend of using extra space in your home as a sit-in cozy nook. I also love the very organic natural pieces such as the live edge tables or driftwood decor. These pieces bring a little more warmth to a space and that’s what every home needs!”

There is also the Uvlade leather sofa with wide arms and depth to it that Lisa absolutely loves. There’s a vintage look to the leather, to where if you scratch it, it will add more rustic charm. The arms are exceptionally wide where it lends itself to additional seating.

“When you walk into the showroom at the Home Source Furniture warehouse for the very first time, you notice it’s styled beautifully. You can turn every corner and see every type of furniture for every style of home. It’s gorgeous and I love it. All of my senses start tingling because I want everything. Then you walk into the warehouse, and it becomes overwhelming because there is so much more furniture to look at. I would stylize the warehouse and showroom with more greenery and rugs. You walk in and immediately smell wood. Bringing warmth to all the senses is very important; especially within a business.”

Here are Lisa’s top 5 tips to spice up your home during quarantine:

  1. Paint your walls! You can paint on your own, practice with different colors, and have fun with it.
  2. If you want to be bold and brave, you can even use peel and stick wallpaper for an accent wall.
  3. Clearing a bookshelf and starting fresh feels good. Just starting over feels good. Push all the furniture to the side and start bringing in pieces one at a time. Rearranging and rethinking your new layout could really change your home.
  4. Do things that make you feel good such as adding plants, or creating a corner with plants. If you’re anything like me that can’t keep a plant alive, artificial plants will work too.
  5. Lastly, I took everything out of my glass cabinets and rearranged it by adding a little bit of color.

Home Source Furniture: 5 Ways To Spice Up Your Home.

Does your home feel a little bland to you?

Being your own interior designer could be fun but a tad stressful. With the pandemic going on, it can feel like we are stuck at home. We want to make our home feel like our sanctuary. A place where we can feel tranquil. Using the items we do have in stock here at Home Source Furniture in Houston, Texas, I found 5 different ways to spice up your home. Here are 7 different tips and tricks to add some spice to your home and make you feel euphoric.

1. Know your style.

I would look on Pinterest boards and/or Instagram profiles that have the specific style that you are going for. What mood do you want to convey in your home, not just for yourself but for others that are welcomed to your home? This should be obvious to anyone who steps past the doormat. However, do not go overboard with the theme. It could definitely get overwhelming and sometimes, cheesy. An example would be an entire apartment filled with a beach theme. There is absolutely nothing wrong with the beach, but what kind of feelings does the beach convey to you? Serene, relaxing, tranquil, and sometimes exotic. You can translate these moods in certain colors, decor, or even music when you have company over.

2. Add depth with a mirror.

Saddle Mirror, Home Source Furniture Warehouse

Adding a large mirror will make your space look a lot bigger than it really is. Our Ansley Oversized Hand-Carved Mirror is definitely a statement piece that looks like it was plucked straight from a European Palace. You do not have to own an oversized mirror, but having mirrors to hang can create the same effect as an oversized mirror. Besides, mirrors enlarge the space and help to distribute light so they are also quite practical. If you enjoy the touch of luxury you definitely should buy such a mirror for your home. Here is also a selection of mirrors that can help create more depth in your home. Home Source Furniture, located in Houston, has many different types of mirrors that could brighten up your home.

3. Roll out a rug.

Our neighbors in Houston, Madison Lily Rugs, have many different types of rugs that go well with all sorts of different styles that you could be going for. Rugs can give both small and big space dwellers the chance to change the mood or feel of an entire room with the addition of a single thing. Rugs come in all sorts of style, size, shape, and texture. Every rug is unique and has its own character.

4. Using driftwood for décor.

Teak Root, Home Source Furniture Post Oak Showroom

This could be an eco-friendly way to use driftwood for decor. Driftwood is typically associated with the coastal or beach theme; however, it can be used for the rustic, farmhouse, or industrial style you are going for. Our store has one-of-a-kind driftwood that is created by designers from tables, decor, wall hangings, lamps, stools, end tables, and more. They can also be functional. For example, a driftwood jewelry hanger, candle holder, wall shelf, or photo display. Driftwood is also very cool for table décor – for centerpieces, placemats, and table garlands. Enjoy the lovely pictures below and get inspired!

5. Texture. Texture. Texture.

Finally, the last way to spice up your home is with texture. Interior design experts say that understanding the importance of texture can be a bit overwhelming because it refers to virtually every surface in the room, from furniture to textiles, wall finishes, floor coverings – and the list goes on! Interior designer and The Block judge Darren Palmer says textural elements, “[When] layered together correctly, will play like a symphony.”With a lot riding on the idea of texture, achieving this look is more than just adding a throw rug here and some patterned cushions over there: So what are the tried and true ways to add texture to a room?Jessica Bellef, an interior stylist for Temple and Webster, shares her top tried-and-true tips for softening the look of your home with textured surfaces and decorative items.

Here are 5 ways to add texture to your home:

  • Roll out a rug.
  • Add plants/greenery. You can even put the pots in baskets!
  • Embrace imperfection by adding antiques or driftwood into your home.
  • Play with patterns.
  • Creative wall hanging like macramé or fiber art.

Although decorating could be fun, it definitely should not be overwhelming or stressful; however, it takes time to pick out décor and furniture that you love and are unique to your taste. Own your environment and make your home an environment you’re proud of. Come visit Home Source Furniture at one of our Houston locations. to add some spice to your home!

4 Ways to Create a Perfect Teen Bedroom

Switch from a Twin Bed to a Queen Bed

teen iron queen bed frame

You wonder, is this really necessary? You may have gone back and forth on whether or not to upgrade the bed in your teen bedroom when the twin they have does fine. A queen bed offers a bit more height and space for your growing teen. Bonus points: their room can now double as a guest room with this swap. Choose a bed frame that can grow with their style as the years go on. A frame like this one allows you to change out the bedding as they grow. Teens change their style as they mature, so choose something that can go with any color bedding.

Choose a Great Desk for Your Teen Bedroom

As kids head to middle school and high school, preparing for their future becomes extremely important. Don’t hesitate to create a space that encourages hard work and studying. A desk in a teen bedroom promotes discipline and good study habits.

Add Two Nightstands

Nightstands complete the room. Don’t forget this important step! We don’t need to mention how messy a teen bedroom can become in no time. Adding nightstands with at least three drawers adds storage space, so the clutter can become minimal and out of sight. Not only do nightstands complete a teen bedroom but they also help organize the room. Two birds, one stone.

Storage, Storage, Storage

If for no other reason than organization, add plenty of storage space. We love this bookshelf because it offers plenty of space for textbooks, novels, and wicker baskets. A well styled shelf adds detail and interesting character to a bedroom.

However you choose to style your growing kid’s bedroom, you’ll find exactly what you need here at our Houston Showroom & Warehouse. Find us locally downtown near the Galleria or in West Houston off the Beltway & I-10. We look forward to seeing you!

How to Add Character to Your Suburban Home with Styling Suburbia

Getting to Know Caroline

Years ago, as a new suburban home owner, Caroline was scrolling through #HomeDecor on social media and it dawned on her: The only homes being featured were either multi-million dollar mansions or century old homes filled with vintage character and charm. Where were all the suburban homes and why were they not being showcased? It’s fair to assume that the majority of Americans do not live in modern castles or renovated old cottages so Caroline decided it was time to showcase the beauty of suburban life. Thus sparked the beautiful idea of Styling Suburbia.

Caroline lives in a beautiful suburban home along the outskirts of Houston, Texas. She is married to her high school sweetheart and has two darling kids in tow (a boy and a girl). Caroline is Houston born & raised, though she has done quite a bit of traveling in her life. She even lived in Dubai a few years back! Caroline graduated from Texas A&M in Business Management and has always had a passion for graphic design. She uses her design talents often as a freelancer but her main gig is the “Mom Life”. She loves it that way! Caroline is also a huge believer that every “Mom-Lifer” needs an outlet, and sharing her design secrets through Styling Suburbia is exactly that.

How to add character to your suburban home

Getting to Know Styling Suburbia

Style Suburban

Caroline is all about adding equity to a home and she believes that adding personality and charm does that best. Often times a builder might put up 5 of the same cookie cutter homes on the same street. She is a big fan of taking a new suburban home and showcasing it’s uniqueness to portray individuality and feature the beauty of suburban life.

Through Styling Suburbia, Caroline has taken her new suburban home and added style and personality to it. While it seems so much of the Pinterest & Instagram world are styled modern farmhouse or bohemian, Caroline has brought the trendy, transitional style to light and perfectly showcased what a suburban home can look like with a little Styling Suburbia.

Lucky for us, she’s spilling all her secrets on how Styling Suburbia works it’s magic.

We interviewed Caroline about all of her secrets. For all the golden ideas on how to add character to your suburban home, keep scrolling to see her responses to our questions!

Detailed hutch for home character

What is your favorite piece to style a room with?

“That’s easy,” she said. “Statement pieces.” She went on to explain that it is easiest for her to design a room around the inspiration of a statement piece. This piece can be as large as a kitchen table, or a simple as a lamp. The most important thing is that the statement piece really speaks to you and exhibits the energy you want for the room.

She recommends, “Don’t buy something to just fill the space. Wait until you find the piece that speaks to you. If it happens to be out of your budget, don’t break down and buy something cheap. Leave the space empty and save for it!” While this may be easier said than done, she has plenty of experience with this tip. When she and her husband bought their first home years ago, they left the downstairs completely empty for three years until they saved up for exactly what they wanted. It’s safe to say, she knows how you feel!

Of all the rooms in a home, which is your favorite to design?

“The living room,” she said. “It is where everyone gathers so the more inviting and cozy it is, the better.” People tend to gravitate towards comfortable areas so a well designed living room encourages camaraderie. Her biggest tip is to “use the fireplace as your anchor piece.” In fact, she suggests tackling the fireplace first if you have a limited budget. “Any time you can add stone, beef up the mantle, or even just use tile paint on the existing tile, you’ll find the room comes to life. The fireplace is the anchor piece of the living room.”

You’ve spoken a few times about how much you love putting together a beautiful dining room. What tips do you have for someone trying to design theirs?

The most important part of a dining room is obviously the dining table. Caroline suggests, “First think of what would fit in your space. How many people are you hoping to be able to seat and do you have space for that size table?” She admits she finds herself leaning toward natural wood tones, chunky legs, and pretty details when looking for dining room tables. Caroline recommends you “pay attention to the undertones of the existing dining room. Consider the color of your paint, the overhead beams, the trim, and the flooring.” You may try to steer clear of bringing in new cool undertones if your existing dining room has warm tones.

You’re currently redoing your own home office. What was the most important concept when you were designing it?

“I really wanted to bring attention to the existing tall ceilings in the space. I designed built-in cabinets to line the main brick wall which will help emphasize the ceiling.” She said she also planned to bring in a desk that comes all the way to the floor so that it will hide the trash can and computer wires behind it. Caroline arranged to fill the remaining space with a buttery soft leather accent chair and a nice taupe office chair as well.

If you are also considering updating your home office space, Caroline recommends first deciding how you work. Are you a minimalist with only a small lap top for work or do you spread out with multiple screens and notes? If you identify with the latter, perhaps a larger desk would be right for you. Are you often on zoom calls? You may want to have your desk face the window instead of the window being behind you… this will help with the video quality and lighting during your calls. While you want it to look nice, Caroline says, “Function over aesthetic in this room. It’s the only room in the house to have that mentality!”

What are your favorite Home Source pieces you’ve purchased to add character to your suburban home?

Caroline also loves her kitchen table & chairs.

“My coffee table was our first Home Source purchase. The legs are so unique. I love that I hadn’t seen anything that looked like it and still haven’t to this day. I love the one of a kind pieces.”

Entryway sideboard in suburban home

The piece that gets the most attention through her social media channels is the Leeds Sideboard in her entryway. It isn’t too deep but it is the perfect length for the wall.

“When we were looking for our master bedroom furniture, we knew we wanted something timeless.” When Caroline saw this bed she knew the vintage gray, the simplicity of the lines, and the beauty of the hand carved details would be the perfect, timeless addition to her bedroom. (Extra points for this bed because it has matching nightstands and a dresser!)

7 Easy Ways To Decorate Your Family Cabin

Have you recently bought a family cabin? Are you preparing to decorate your family cabin soon? It can be overwhelming when it seems there is so much to design, plan, decorate, and purchase. We’ve made it easy with these “7 simple ways to decorate your family cabin”.

Tip #1 Decorate your Family Cabin with Plenty of Seating

The cabin is meant to be a place for family to gather. That may be the first reason you bought it in the first place. To invite people to sit around and stay awhile creating great conversation, you may find it fun and cozy to seat many people in the great room. There are many ways to achieve this. First, make sure to put in a large couch. From there, build around the couch. Add soft chairs with character (think leather or upholstered pieces). Poufs can be a simple decoration or be used as extra seating when needed.

Tip #2 Decorate your Master Bedroom with Unique Pieces

Think about it, this is your second home. Your home away from home, if you will. Instead of decorating the master bedroom exactly like your every day home, go with a more unique style. Perhaps you find yourself leaning more toward the cozy cabin feel so you choose a rustic headboard. You might also need a unique dresser for storage when you stay the week. Throw in some nightstands and a bench and you’re set in the master suite.

Tip #3 Put A Unusual Bench in the Entry

As mentioned above, this is a fun opportunity to choose pieces you love but wouldn’t ordinarily bring into your home. Put a bench like this one on the front porch that has a lot of texture so it adds to the curb appeal, while also providing a quiet place to watch the sunset. Also, use a bench right inside the entryway where people can sit to take off their boots. Speaking of benches, perhaps you’d like to use one like this near the fireplace for those cozy, chilly nights.

Tip #4 Choose Reclaimed Wood for Guest Rooms

Reclaimed wood is the perfect addition to any cabin, regardless of location. It is both warm and rustic while creating a classical or traditional style for the room. Throw in plenty of neutral colored throw pillows and a giant duvet for cozy nights.

Tip #5 Choose a LARGE Kitchen Table

Because the cabin is meant to be a gathering place (at least some of the time!!) you might think about the size of kitchen table you’d like. How many family members and friends might you like to fit around the table at one time? A reclaimed wood table would make quite a statement in your cabin kitchen. If you’re having a hard time choosing a kitchen table to decorate your family cabin, check out this blog post for some tips!

Tip #6 Outdoor Furniture

If your cabin is somewhere that is warm at least part of the year, outdoor furniture will be extremely important. Rustic benches work very well for back decks. Throw in an outdoor table and chairs with a pop of fun color.

Tip #7: Splurge on a Few Pieces

5 Tips For Choosing Your Kitchen Table

How to choose a kitchen table

5 tips for choosing your kitchen table. Are you struggling to choose the best kitchen table for your home? This is the post for you!

Choose The Size of Your Kitchen Table

Transitional dining table. Houston Furniture Store.

First, choose the right size. The size will be determined by two factors.

#1. How many people need to be able to sit around it at one time? You may want to be able to fit every aunt and second cousin for the holidays but consider the every day life occurrences for the kitchen table instead. Perhaps, choose a table to fit your immediate family in the kitchen and leave the holiday dinners to your dining room table.

#2. What does your kitchen have space for? Choose a table that fills up the available space but doesn’t go overboard. You should be able to easily walk around it even with the chairs there too.

(You can find the table to the left here.)

Choose The Shape

Houston Furniture Store. Round table.

What shape is your go to? What would fit in your space best? The most common shape of table is a classic rectangle. However, it is becoming more common to choose round tables in the kitchen as it makes for great conversations. You might find yourself going with a square kitchen table as well.

Choose The Style of Your Kitchen Table

Houston Furniture Store. Barn wood herringbone kitchen table.

Do you like a rustic style? What about french-country? Whether you find yourself leaning towards mid-century modern, transitional, or modern farmhouse, you’ll need to know which style you’d like before you officially choose a kitchen table.

(You can find the table to the left here.)

Choose The Material

Houston Furniture Store. Reclaimed wood table.

These days there are so many options when it comes to materials. The important thing is that the table you choose will be with your family for years, if not generations. It is important to choose a material that can withstand the test of time. Bonus points if it can withstand the changing of styles as well! Whether you choose a live edge oak, deep stained walnut, hand carved wood, salvaged wood, weathered wood, choose one with a promise of high quality. When choosing a kitchen table, the material truly matters-not only in style but durability as well.

Go With Your Gut

Modern dining table. Houston Furniture Store.

In the end, it doesn’t matter what you read or how long you search. You know in your heart what your favorite kitchen table is. And if you don’t… it’s the one you thought of when you read that last statement *wink*.

So make the call, stop by the store, hit purchase. You know which one you need now– congratulations.
