Getting to Know Caroline

Years ago, as a new suburban home owner, Caroline was scrolling through #HomeDecor on social media and it dawned on her: The only homes being featured were either multi-million dollar mansions or century old homes filled with vintage character and charm. Where were all the suburban homes and why were they not being showcased? It’s fair to assume that the majority of Americans do not live in modern castles or renovated old cottages so Caroline decided it was time to showcase the beauty of suburban life. Thus sparked the beautiful idea of Styling Suburbia.

Caroline lives in a beautiful suburban home along the outskirts of Houston, Texas. She is married to her high school sweetheart and has two darling kids in tow (a boy and a girl). Caroline is Houston born & raised, though she has done quite a bit of traveling in her life. She even lived in Dubai a few years back! Caroline graduated from Texas A&M in Business Management and has always had a passion for graphic design. She uses her design talents often as a freelancer but her main gig is the “Mom Life”. She loves it that way! Caroline is also a huge believer that every “Mom-Lifer” needs an outlet, and sharing her design secrets through Styling Suburbia is exactly that.

How to add character to your suburban home

Getting to Know Styling Suburbia

Style Suburban

Caroline is all about adding equity to a home and she believes that adding personality and charm does that best. Often times a builder might put up 5 of the same cookie cutter homes on the same street. She is a big fan of taking a new suburban home and showcasing it’s uniqueness to portray individuality and feature the beauty of suburban life.

Through Styling Suburbia, Caroline has taken her new suburban home and added style and personality to it. While it seems so much of the Pinterest & Instagram world are styled modern farmhouse or bohemian, Caroline has brought the trendy, transitional style to light and perfectly showcased what a suburban home can look like with a little Styling Suburbia.

Lucky for us, she’s spilling all her secrets on how Styling Suburbia works it’s magic.

We interviewed Caroline about all of her secrets. For all the golden ideas on how to add character to your suburban home, keep scrolling to see her responses to our questions!

Detailed hutch for home character

What is your favorite piece to style a room with?

“That’s easy,” she said. “Statement pieces.” She went on to explain that it is easiest for her to design a room around the inspiration of a statement piece. This piece can be as large as a kitchen table, or a simple as a lamp. The most important thing is that the statement piece really speaks to you and exhibits the energy you want for the room.

She recommends, “Don’t buy something to just fill the space. Wait until you find the piece that speaks to you. If it happens to be out of your budget, don’t break down and buy something cheap. Leave the space empty and save for it!” While this may be easier said than done, she has plenty of experience with this tip. When she and her husband bought their first home years ago, they left the downstairs completely empty for three years until they saved up for exactly what they wanted. It’s safe to say, she knows how you feel!

Of all the rooms in a home, which is your favorite to design?

“The living room,” she said. “It is where everyone gathers so the more inviting and cozy it is, the better.” People tend to gravitate towards comfortable areas so a well designed living room encourages camaraderie. Her biggest tip is to “use the fireplace as your anchor piece.” In fact, she suggests tackling the fireplace first if you have a limited budget. “Any time you can add stone, beef up the mantle, or even just use tile paint on the existing tile, you’ll find the room comes to life. The fireplace is the anchor piece of the living room.”

You’ve spoken a few times about how much you love putting together a beautiful dining room. What tips do you have for someone trying to design theirs?

The most important part of a dining room is obviously the dining table. Caroline suggests, “First think of what would fit in your space. How many people are you hoping to be able to seat and do you have space for that size table?” She admits she finds herself leaning toward natural wood tones, chunky legs, and pretty details when looking for dining room tables. Caroline recommends you “pay attention to the undertones of the existing dining room. Consider the color of your paint, the overhead beams, the trim, and the flooring.” You may try to steer clear of bringing in new cool undertones if your existing dining room has warm tones.

You’re currently redoing your own home office. What was the most important concept when you were designing it?

“I really wanted to bring attention to the existing tall ceilings in the space. I designed built-in cabinets to line the main brick wall which will help emphasize the ceiling.” She said she also planned to bring in a desk that comes all the way to the floor so that it will hide the trash can and computer wires behind it. Caroline arranged to fill the remaining space with a buttery soft leather accent chair and a nice taupe office chair as well.

If you are also considering updating your home office space, Caroline recommends first deciding how you work. Are you a minimalist with only a small lap top for work or do you spread out with multiple screens and notes? If you identify with the latter, perhaps a larger desk would be right for you. Are you often on zoom calls? You may want to have your desk face the window instead of the window being behind you… this will help with the video quality and lighting during your calls. While you want it to look nice, Caroline says, “Function over aesthetic in this room. It’s the only room in the house to have that mentality!”

What are your favorite Home Source pieces you’ve purchased to add character to your suburban home?

Caroline also loves her kitchen table & chairs.

“My coffee table was our first Home Source purchase. The legs are so unique. I love that I hadn’t seen anything that looked like it and still haven’t to this day. I love the one of a kind pieces.”

Entryway sideboard in suburban home

The piece that gets the most attention through her social media channels is the Leeds Sideboard in her entryway. It isn’t too deep but it is the perfect length for the wall.

“When we were looking for our master bedroom furniture, we knew we wanted something timeless.” When Caroline saw this bed she knew the vintage gray, the simplicity of the lines, and the beauty of the hand carved details would be the perfect, timeless addition to her bedroom. (Extra points for this bed because it has matching nightstands and a dresser!)

7 Easy Ways To Decorate Your Family Cabin

drew coffman EbivdbB83Y0 unsplash scaled

Have you recently bought a family cabin? Are you preparing to decorate your family cabin soon? It can be overwhelming when it seems there is so much to design, plan, decorate, and purchase. We’ve made it easy with these “7 simple ways to decorate your family cabin”.

Tip #1 Decorate your Family Cabin with Plenty of Seating

drew coffman EbivdbB83Y0 unsplash

The cabin is meant to be a place for family to gather. That may be the first reason you bought it in the first place. To invite people to sit around and stay awhile creating great conversation, you may find it fun and cozy to seat many people in the great room. There are many ways to achieve this. First, make sure to put in a large couch. From there, build around the couch. Add soft chairs with character (think leather or upholstered pieces). Poufs can be a simple decoration or be used as extra seating when needed.

Tip #2 Decorate your Master Bedroom with Unique Pieces

Think about it, this is your second home. Your home away from home, if you will. Instead of decorating the master bedroom exactly like your every day home, go with a more unique style. Perhaps you find yourself leaning more toward the cozy cabin feel so you choose a rustic headboard. You might also need a unique dresser for storage when you stay the week. Throw in some nightstands and a bench and you’re set in the master suite.

Tip #3 Put A Unusual Bench in the Entry

andrea davis 7Z0Nn04geSY unsplash

As mentioned above, this is a fun opportunity to choose pieces you love but wouldn’t ordinarily bring into your home. Put a bench like this one on the front porch that has a lot of texture so it adds to the curb appeal, while also providing a quiet place to watch the sunset. Also, use a bench right inside the entryway where people can sit to take off their boots. Speaking of benches, perhaps you’d like to use one like this near the fireplace for those cozy, chilly nights.

Tip #4 Choose Reclaimed Wood for Guest Rooms

Hampton King

Reclaimed wood is the perfect addition to any cabin, regardless of location. It is both warm and rustic while creating a classical or traditional style for the room. Throw in plenty of neutral colored throw pillows and a giant duvet for cozy nights.

Tip #5 Choose a LARGE Kitchen Table

orlova maria BILBJXEp6a8 unsplash 1

Because the cabin is meant to be a gathering place (at least some of the time!!) you might think about the size of kitchen table you’d like. How many family members and friends might you like to fit around the table at one time? A reclaimed wood table would make quite a statement in your cabin kitchen. If you’re having a hard time choosing a kitchen table to decorate your family cabin, check out this blog post for some tips!

Tip #6 Outdoor Furniture

If your cabin is somewhere that is warm at least part of the year, outdoor furniture will be extremely important. Rustic benches work very well for back decks. Throw in an outdoor table and chairs with a pop of fun color.

5 Tips For Choosing Your Kitchen Table

How to choose a kitchen table

5 tips for choosing your kitchen table. Are you struggling to choose the best kitchen table for your home? This is the post for you!

Choose The Size of Your Kitchen Table

Transitional dining table. Houston Furniture Store.

First, choose the right size. The size will be determined by two factors.

#1. How many people need to be able to sit around it at one time? You may want to be able to fit every aunt and second cousin for the holidays but consider the every day life occurrences for the kitchen table instead. Perhaps, choose a table to fit your immediate family in the kitchen and leave the holiday dinners to your dining room table.

#2. What does your kitchen have space for? Choose a table that fills up the available space but doesn’t go overboard. You should be able to easily walk around it even with the chairs there too.

(You can find the table to the left here.)

Choose The Shape

Houston Furniture Store. Round table.

What shape is your go to? What would fit in your space best? The most common shape of table is a classic rectangle. However, it is becoming more common to choose round tables in the kitchen as it makes for great conversations. You might find yourself going with a square kitchen table as well.

Choose The Style of Your Kitchen Table

Houston Furniture Store. Barn wood herringbone kitchen table.

Do you like a rustic style? What about french-country? Whether you find yourself leaning towards mid-century modern, transitional, or modern farmhouse, you’ll need to know which style you’d like before you officially choose a kitchen table.

(You can find the table to the left here.)

Choose The Material

Houston Furniture Store. Reclaimed wood table.

These days there are so many options when it comes to materials. The important thing is that the table you choose will be with your family for years, if not generations. It is important to choose a material that can withstand the test of time. Bonus points if it can withstand the changing of styles as well! Whether you choose a live edge oak, deep stained walnut, hand carved wood, salvaged wood, weathered wood, choose one with a promise of high quality. When choosing a kitchen table, the material truly matters-not only in style but durability as well.

Go With Your Gut

Modern dining table. Houston Furniture Store.

In the end, it doesn’t matter what you read or how long you search. You know in your heart what your favorite kitchen table is. And if you don’t… it’s the one you thought of when you read that last statement *wink*.

So make the call, stop by the store, hit purchase. You know which one you need now– congratulations.

*psstttt we deliver!*

5 Ways To Achieve Scandinavian Modern Style

minh pham OtXADkUh3 I unsplash scaled

Scandinavian Modern style is all the rage these days (and honestly will probably stay that way forever since it brings a cozy, clean, calm vibe along with it). Scandinavian home design is known for its simplistic form, clean lines, and functional design. One of the most important parts of achieving Scandinavian Modern style is choosing the correct colors– greys, blacks, whites with pops of leather, greenery, and natural wood.

Tip #1 Start with Neutral

Modern Scandinavian Home Decor

Neutral colors are the main building blocks of Scandinavian Modern Style. Arguably, it is the most important part of achieving this beautiful, calming style. Aim to have 85% of your room in black, white, cream, tan, and gray. Perhaps, start with a gray or cream couch in your home. Choose a neutral rug and a comfy throw. Neutral throw pillows are a great addition as well. Long neutral curtains and walls go a long way.

Tip #2 Throw in Pops of Natural Wood

Live edge wood dining table

Natural wood is all the rage in modern and Scandinavian styles. When styling a home office, build your decor around a natural wood desk or chair. Natural wood frames, mirrors, pots all add to the feel. Live edge wood dining tables add a beautiful pop of natural wood in a kitchen. Moreover, natural wood dressers or cabinets are a great addition in hallways and bedrooms. In a family room, add a coffee table as a center point of the room. The goal here is to choose only touches of wood while still keeping most of the room neutral in color and pattern.

Tip #3 Think Simple

Scandinavian style nightstands

Declutter, declutter, declutter. Scandinavian style is all about calm, clean, bright. Remove any clutter from bookshelves, end tables, nightstands. Minimalism is what makes up Scandinavian style. Every item serves a clear purpose. In every sense, less is more here. Marie Kondo the heck out of your space. If it doesn’t serve a purpose or bring joy, toss it.

Tip #4 Toss in A Bit of Leather

Say yes to some gorgeous leather. Similar to the amount of natural wood mentioned above, we only want a bit of leather thrown in. Just enough to draw the eye but not so much to overwhelm or darken the space. In a family room, consider a vintage leather sofa that will truly never go out of style. There are so. many. options. when it comes to choosing leather sofas and sectionals. Choose wisely because these last for generations.

You may also decide to add accents of leather by throwing in some leather pillows or a leather chair and footstool. In a kitchen, leather barstools. In an office, leather office chair.

Tip #5 Add Greenery

Unique Hanging Pots

Use these five tips to bring the Modern Scandinavian style to your home. Enjoy the neutral, calming, bright color scheme while embracing accents of greenery, wood, and leather.

The Beautiful World of Transitional Buffets

Wengler Sideboard

When you hear the word “buffet,” you probably think of an endless row of food that usually ends with a full belly and heartburn. However, when it comes to decorating your home, transitional buffets may be the option you need when you are looking to complete a dining room. You may also have an empty entryway or just need a piece with lots of storage. Buffets –  sometimes referred to as sideboards –come in a wide variety of sizes, materials and styles. It will be hard not to find the perfect one at our showroom or warehouse. When you come to visit us, keep these few questions in mind:

How much storage do you need?

The main function of a buffet is usually storage. Transitional buffets are great for rooms that lack storage. They are usually placed in dining rooms to store china and make the room look less bare. Depending on the size of the room and how much you have to store is important to keep in mind. Some may need a large buffet like our eight-foot Baker Sideboard, Warm Brown with Brass, while something smaller like the Essex Buffet could suffice. It all depends on how much space you have to spare.

How neat are you?

When it comes to decorating, one rule remains constant: Clutter is not cute. Much like the trend of floating shelves in kitchens, buffets can have or not have doors, or be see-through with glass, like the MSI 442. Therefore, you need to be honest with yourself about how organized you plan to be when showing off your prized china.

Where do you want to place your transitional buffets?

While buffets are usually located in the dining room, there is no reason they have to be confined to that space. A buffet can work in an entryway as a catchall or can even spruce up a hallway with decorative tchotchkes, flowers or mirror. For example, our Haxby Buffet, is a versatile design that will shine in any room.

By taking these few questions into consideration, you can choose the right buffet to use and make sure it won’t cause you any belly ache.

Thanks for reading about buffets. To get more information and to not miss any tips, follow us on Instagram, Facebook, & Pinterest.

Sideboards and Media Consoles and TV Stands – Oh My!

There are many names for them but media consoles have always been an integral fixture in living rooms. Their style has changed over time from a boxy armoire with doors, to a streamlined design that is lower to the ground and puts the television on display. Fortunately, there are many options to choose from and here are some key things to remember when selecting the best one for you.

Style vs. Function

When shopping for a TV stand, you need to first ask yourself one question: Do I care more about style or function? This is an important decision because if you prefer function, look for lots of storage and a way to hide all those unsightly auxiliary cords, like our traditional Tempus Media Console does. However, if you care more about style, our Merino Sideboard may be just the piece you are looking for.

Size Does Matter

Take into account your TV’s size when purchasing media consoles. Always measure your television beforehand so you know how wide your sideboard needs to be. TVs are measured diagonally, from corner to corner of the screen. The TV’s width is a different measurement – from edge to edge – which you’ll also want to jot down. A good rule of thumb is that you want your TV stand to be at least two inches wider than the screens width. For example, a television with a 26” width would need a stand at least 28 inches in width.

Match Your Décor

If you are opting to not hire a decorator, you’ll want to pick a media console that won’t stick out like a sore thumb in the room. If you enjoy the modern look, go for a sleek design like our Bogart Sideboard. Also, keep in mind that you don’t have to buy a matchy set when designing a room. If all your furniture is traditional with the popular grey wash, choose anything from the MSI 450 to the Sabine Sideboard to complete your home.

Now curl up with a blanket and a bowl of popcorn and enjoy the real star of your living room – your brand-new media console.

How to Find the Perfect Dining and Kitchen Table.

Wexford Dining Table

Pull up a chair and let’s discuss finding a dining and kitchen table, arguably one of the most important pieces of furniture in a home. Even though it seems we’re all just rushing through a meal on the couch watching Netflix, your dining table serves as a gathering spot and hub for activity. It is where we create lasting memories and bond with family and friends over food.

So, what are some things to keep in mind when making this important purchase?

Come in Prepared

One of the biggest mistakes we see people make is putting the cart before the horse by trying to choose a table based upon already-purchased chairs. The dining table will most likely be the costlier of the two purchases and a longer lasting investment, therefore it is better to purchase that first.

Make Sure It Fits

While you want to choose a dining and kitchen table that fits within your design scheme, you need to make sure it will accommodate seating space for your entire family. A good rule of thumb is that every 10-12 inches counts as a seat for a circular table. For instance, a 60-inch round table would seat six people comfortably. Also, do a little measuring beforehand to see how much space you can afford to lose in the room without making it feel too cluttered.

What’s Your Style?

Most importantly, when choosing a dining and/or kitchen table, be sure to keep your home’s décor in mind and get a piece that will fit in seamlessly. If the rest of your home follows a:

  • Traditional style, look for a table that will be transitional and never go out of style. Avoid trends and stick with basic shapes and materials like our grey washed Cheyenne Dining Table that allows you to dress it up or down with chairs and accessories.
  • Rustic décor, then any of our reclaimed wood tables are the way to go. Larger legs and wooden tabletop will give a farmhouse quality, like our Wentworth Dining Table, and bring in that country ambiance.
  • Modern elegance, go chic lines with high-end materials. Live-edge tables are very fashion forward and add a unique and upscale quality that sets them apart like with our Marlboro Salvaged Wood Dining Table.
  • Industrial or loft-like atmosphere, mix metallic materials with machine details like our Stockton Iron Crank Table

No matter what your style, find a balance of function and flair that you truly love. You don’t want to look back on all those Thanksgivings and remember sitting at something you regret.
